360° VR FILMS curated by Experimenta

imseDOME x Experimenta
From Frame to Sphere: 3 x VR360° works by Filmmakers Gina Wong, Kal Ng, and Gustav Hellberg

Tuesdays and Thursdays; 3:00pm

Experimenta will be presenting three new 360° films on imseDome this April 2018. They are created by filmmakers Gina Wong, Kal Ng, and Gustav Hellberg. 360° story-telling is still in its infancy and this partnership will bring new narrative dimensions to inspire students and creative filmmakers.

Immersive sensations are already in our every day lives. A simulation of the events automatically runs in our heads when we hear a story. We tell stories in different mediums: from audio to visual to experiencing it up close and personal. With 360 degree and Virtual Reality films, our consciousness has become the medium.

Experimenta is a Hong Kong registered non-profit organization dedicated to video-art, cutting edge filmmaking and curating original multi-media production since 2009.  Experimenta's most recent film exhibitions was Six Ways to the Senses at the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Beijing as part of the month long Beijing Media Arts Biennale.

Villa Treviso by Gina WONG

08:34.98H.264, AVC Coding, 1980 x 1080, Dolby Digital 5.1

This experimental work is a cumulation of 15 years of travels by the filmmaker to the Veneto neighboring Friuli regions.  The filmmaker first visited Friulli regions when she was invited to a friend's home in a village called San Lorenzo.  The monologue in the fil are taken from real conversations from women and filmmaker met over a dozen trips made to the regions over 15 tears: these words told by a countess, a supermarket check-out assistant, a photo shop owners and the housewives who lives in the area. Other parts of the monologue are inspired by two Italian feminist writers: The Silent Duchess by Dacia Maraini and the Birth and Death of a Housewife by Paola Masin.

The Portal by Kal NG

17:45.98H.264, GoProCineForm Coding, 4096 x 2048, Ambiosonics

Cinema has always been a transporter. The transporter not of bodies but the human minds. With the evolution of the VR360 film format, the medium is edging closer to what Andre Bazin called "Total Cinema", a complete fabrication of reality. The filmmaker rethinks the medium as a transporter to places, to dreams and to different landscapes, from the real one to the imaginary and back. Paying homage to the classic Chinese fable The Peach Blossom Spring by Tao Yuan Ming (421AD), the Portal is the threshold for the harbinger of the new world after Google World finishes mapping the physical earth.

Tracing Korea by Gustav HELLBERG

13:44.82H.264, AVC Coding, 3840 x 2160, Stereo

Tracing Korea has been made with a drone flying over a rural area just south of Seoul. The drone camera has been pointed straight down, which creates a map like view of the landscape. This video installation is part of a larger project, where Gustav Hellberg is investigating the complex reality of nationality and nationalism. With this video Hellberg is focusing on the land and is trying to show discrepancies between factual situations, image comprehension and preconceived notions of a land's identity.
